Breeding Collies was not something I rushed into right away. Before getting my first show
dog, I studied every book I could get my hands on and went to every show I could find and
watched Collies. I did Collie Rescue work for years. I had finished 2 champions before I
purchased my foundation bitch, "Bonnie".
My good friend, Marion Liebsch (Pebblebrook Collies) co-bred, along with her husband,
Pete Liebsch and Tom and Nioma Coen (Macdega) a litter out of Macdega Serenata sired
by Ch. Executive's Gemstone Tycoon. Since the puppies were born at Marion's home, I was
able to see them and was taken by this pretty sable girl who I wanted in the worst way.
However, Tom would have first pick of the puppies and I waited for him for what seemed
like forever to make his choice. As it turned out, he settled on a tri-color female and I
brought home to West Point what was to become Am./Can. Ch. Pebblebrook in the
Spotlight HIC. "Bonnie" was the start of what West Point Collies are known for today.
She had looks and movement that I had to have in my family. When I decided to breed her
it would be to an outcross dog belonging to Martha Ramer (Society Collies) in California.
Bonnie came from an outcross breeding and this was a big risk for me. However, I knew
from pheno-type and pedigree that this might just be a good breeding. The gamble paid off
and she went on to produce 5 Champions from 2 breedings. With the help of two great
people, Marion Liebsch and Martha Ramer, from and to whom I owe a lot and learned so
much, West Point Collies cemented its foundation and has become a consistent and
established producer of quality Collies for over 27 years. A big thank you to Marion and
Martha!
